Chapter Eighteen
The next day, on board Flight 311 to Paris via Tunisia, Zakia began to think about her recent experiences. She had put the flash drive from Daliyah and the one from Maati, the scientist at the weather station, together with her passport, in a thin travel pouch under her shirt before she left Fatimaâs apartment.
When the passengers were cleared to move about the cabin, she got up to use the restroom. On her way down the aisle, she did a double-take when she saw a familiar face a few rows behind her seat. It was the scar-faced man who had trailed her and her sons when they took the taxi to the airport, and again in the terminal before they headed for China.
It wasnât as though she could tell the flight attendant that a lot of bad things had been happening to her lately and that this man might want to harm her.
Why hadnât they just taken her out already? Theyâd had no qualms about killing Elias or Tariq.
Both Benjamin and her boss had said that she was putting herself in dangerâthat she could be nextâand yet, nothing fatal had happened to her. Why not?
Had her position at the paper given her extra protection? Not likely; journalists were being killed all over the map these days. Then it hit her and she felt foolish. Samara had mentioned her father when theyâd met on the cruise ship. Maybe her dadâs connections and prominence afforded her some protection. She had met many of the VIPs at social gatherings in her parentsâ home in Rabat when she was a teenager. Her dad used to joke that she was set for life, but she hadnât understood him at the time. She racked her brain. Would any of his friends still have her on their radar? Did any of them still watch out for her?
When she returned from the restroom, she checked that the file with the papers from Daliyah was tucked in the bottom of her bag. It was, but she suspected it wouldnât be for long. She was also interested in seeing if this man was really tailing her or if it was just another coincidence and, if it was the former, how far would he go?
Zakia settled in to wait. As she expected, the scar- faced man got on the flight for the next leg of her trip to Paris. An hour into the flight, without warning, the plane was hit by violent turbulence, which shook the aircraft so fiercely Zakia was sure they wouldnât make it. The oxygen masks dropped, some women started crying, others screamed. Then the captain asked everyone to brace themselves. Zakia said a short prayer. Some fifty minutes later, by some miracle the turbulence was gone. Once it was over, the captain came on the intercom and announced drinks would be served at no charge. Everyone started clapping.
When they were close to landing, but before the fasten seatbelts sign went on, Zakia saw an opportune moment.
